Dr. Clement Jones: A Legacy of Healing and Representation at Saint Francis Hospital
Foundation News & Updates

In the heart of San Francisco, where diverse communities converge, Dr. Clement Jones has dedicated more than three decades to transforming lives through orthopedic and spine surgery at Saint Francis Hospital. His journey to medicine was deeply personal—shaped by the altruism of his family physician, who went beyond the call of duty to support patients in need. That early exposure to compassionate care sparked a lifelong commitment to healing.
Dr. Jones’ path to orthopedics was not straightforward. Initially drawn to emergency medicine, he soon realized that while ER doctors stabilized patients, it was surgeons who provided lasting solutions. His passion for hands-on care led him to train as a trauma surgeon before finding his true calling in orthopedic surgery. As a young physician, he broke barriers, becoming the first Black resident in Vanderbilt University’s orthopedic surgery program. Today, he takes immense pride in seeing a more diverse field, where students and residents of all backgrounds can pursue their medical aspirations.
At Saint Francis, Dr. Jones has built a legacy of both excellence and autonomy in patient care. He has performed countless surgeries, from complex spine procedures to orthopedic reconstructions, restoring mobility and hope to those in need.
One of his most memorable cases involved a collegiate athlete who, after surgery, went on to play professional football and win a Super Bowl championship. In a touching moment of gratitude, the athlete included Dr. Jones in his personal journal the night before the big game, recognizing the surgery as a turning point in his life.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Jones has played a crucial role in hospital leadership, serving as Vice Chief of Staff and previously as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. His work extends beyond surgical care—he advocates for quality assurance, patient safety, and maintaining the high standards that define Saint Francis. However, he acknowledges the growing challenges in healthcare, particularly the increasing interference of insurance companies, which often deny necessary procedures, making it harder for doctors to provide the best care possible.
Throughout his career, Dr. Jones has witnessed and contributed to the increasing diversity in medicine. He takes pride in the progress made toward inclusivity, particularly in medical education and training. Having grown up in Newark, New Jersey, amidst periods of social unrest, he often reflects on how fortunate he is to have pursued his dreams. His achievements are not just his own—they pave the way for future generations of Black physicians and healthcare professionals.
As we celebrate Black History Month, Dr. Jones’ story serves as a powerful testament to perseverance, representation, and service. At Saint Francis Foundation, we are honored to recognize his remarkable impact on our hospital and community. His dedication to patient care, advocacy for equitable healthcare, and commitment to mentoring the next generation of physicians embody the values we celebrate during Black History Month—and every day of the year.
