Mayor Breed Endorses Safer Inside Demonstration Project

On Sunday, July 15, Mayor Breed officially announced the Safer Inside Demonstration Project – a temporary operational demonstration model of a safe injection site open to the community for education and outreach from August 28 – 31, 2018 in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.

Safe injection sites have been known to reduce public drug use by providing a clean, safe space with access to treatment for those suffering from addiction. These facilities prohibit the sale or purchase of recreational drugs but do provide sterile injection equipment, information about drugs and basic health care, treatment referrals and access to medical staff. Safe infection sites, which already exist in over 50 locations in 10 countries, are part of a continuum of harm reduction services and have been shown to decrease negative health, social and economic consequences associated with injection drug use.

Presented by the Safer Inside community, in conjunction with the Tenderloin Health Improvement Partnership (TLHIP), designed by Capital One Design Pro Bono, and hosted by GLIDE, this collaborative project will demonstrate the integration of safe injection services (SIS) into an existing multi-service organization. The temporary exhibition will allow for community engagement through multiple events, including speaker panels and forums. As a prototype, this project will also provide opportunities to test how a site like this might actually function, as well as obtain feedback from various service providers, such as Tenderloin medical clinics, harm reduction programs, and treatment programs, and the community at large.

The Safer Inside Demonstration is scheduled for August 28 – 31, 2018 at 330 Ellis St. on Taylor St. This event coincides with the annual Californian Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference – The State of the Art in Addiction Medicine (Aug 29 – Sept 1) and Overdose Awareness Day (Aug 31).
